Three seats on the School City of Hammond School Board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbents George T. Janiec, Lucinda Murphy and Deborah White defeated challengers Cherie Howard-Roberts, Dale Parrish and Regan E. Robinson for three at-large seats.[1]

School City of Hammond is located in Lake County, Indiana. The county seat is Crown Point. Lake County is home to 491,456 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, School City of Hammond was the 11th-largest school district in Indiana and served 13,742 students.[3]

Demographics

Lake County underperformed compared to the rest of Indiana in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 19.7 percent of Lake County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.0 percent for Indiana as a whole. The median household income for Lake County was $49,315 compared to $48,374 for the state of Indiana. The percentage of people below poverty level for Lake County was 17.4 percent while it was 14.7 percent for the state of Indiana.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Hammond School Board consists of five members elected at-large to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on July 23, 2014, and ended on August 22, 2014. Write-in candidates also had to file by August 22, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[5]
