April 10, 2018: The number of U.S. visitor visas issued to people from around the world fell 13% over the past year. In fiscal year 2016, the U.S. issued an average of 865,124 visas worldwide per month. For the 12 months ending in February 2018, that fell to 754,479 visitor visas worldwide per month.

A Politico analysis reported that “it’s unclear whether the drop is due to fewer people applying or more rejections of applications.”[1] The analysis noted that the decline has accelerated over the past six months.

“People from Arab and Muslim-majority nations saw some of the steepest drops in visitor visas,” according to Politico. China also received “tens of thousands fewer visitor visas compared with fiscal year 2016.”
