October 6, 2022: Ten hitters have won baseball’s Triple Crown.

Baseball’s Triple Crown is awarded to a player who leads his league in home runs, batting average, and runs batted in (RBIs) in a single season. Since the RBI became an official statistic in 1920, ten players have accomplished this feat, with two doing it twice, for a total of 12 Triple Crowns. The first was 100 years ago, in 1922.

This year, Aaron Judge very nearly accomplished it.

  • He led the American League in home runs with 62, breaking the previous AL record of 61, set by Roger Maris 61 years ago in 1961.
  • He also led the number two home run hitter by more than 20, which hasn’t been done since 1928 when Babe Ruth led the league with 54 and Lou Gehrig came second with 27.
  • He led the league in RBIs with 131.
  • He fell just short in batting average, hitting .311, while Luis Arraez won the batting title hitting .316.
