This week's Federal Vacancy Count includes nominations, confirmations and vacancies from March 25, 2015, to March 31, 2015. Nominations, confirmations and vacancies occurring on April 1 will be reflected in the April 8 report.
The number of vacancies remained unchanged this week as there were no new vacancies or confirmations. There were two new nominations, the first since February 26.
The vacancy warning level remained at blue this week after no new vacancies, two new nominations and no new confirmations. The vacancy percentage remained at 6.3 percent, and the total number of nominees waiting for confirmation rose to 18. The number of vacancies of Article III judges remained at 55 out of 874. District of Maryland
Paula Xinis
| Paula Xinis received a nomination to the United States District Court for the District of Maryland from President Barack Obama on March 26, 2015. Xinis is currently a partner at the law firm of Murphy, Falcon & Murphy. Her prior experience includes working as an assistant federal public defender. She started her career as a law clerk for Judge Diana Motz of the Fourth Circuit. Xinis earned her B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1991 and her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1997.[2]
If confirmed, Xinis will fill a vacancy created by Deborah Chasanow, who assumed senior status on October 3, 2014. The United States District Court for the District of Maryland currently has one vacancy, and the warning level is set at blue. |

John Michael Vazquez
District of New Jersey
| On March 26, 2015, President Barack Obama nominated John Michael Vazquez to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. Vazquez is currently a partner at the law firm of Critchley, Kinum & Vazquez, LLC. His prior experience includes working as special assistant to the attorney general of New Jersey, as an assistant United States attorney for the District of New Jersey and as an associate for the Law Offices of Michael Critchley and Associates. Vazquez earned his B.A. from Rutgers University in 1992 and his J.D., graduating summa cum laude, from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1996.[2]
If confirmed, Vazquez would fill a vacancy created by Joel Pisano, who retired from the court on February 16, 2015. The United States District Court for the District of New Jersey currently has three vacancies, and the warning level is set at yellow. |
