Three seats on the Whitfield County Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, to determine the Republican candidate for District 2. Incumbent Rodney Lock defeated challenger Jamie Johnson in the District 2 primary and won re-election unopposed in the general election. Board members Bill Worley and Louis D. Fordham won without opposition in the Republican primaries for the at-large and District 4 seats, respectively. Worley and Fordham won re-election unopposed in the general election on November 4, 2014.

Whitfield County Schools is located in Whitfield County, Georgia. The county seat of Whitfield County is Dalton, Georgia. Whitfield County was home to 102,945 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Whitfield County Schools was the 27th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 13,273 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Whitfield County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 14.7 percent of Whitfield County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Whitfield County was $41,832 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Whitfield County was 19.4 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Whitfield County Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Four members are elected to specific geographic districts with the fifth member elected at-large. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[3]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[4]
