Torrance Unified School District employed 1,012 K-12 teachers during the 2011-2012 school year.<ref>[http://www.ed-data.k12.ca.us/App_Resx/EdDataClassic/fsTwoPanel.aspx?#!bottom=/_layouts/EdDataClassic/profile.asp?tab=2&level=06&ReportNumber=16&County=19&fyr=1112&District=65060 ''Education Data Partnership,'' "Torrance Unified School District," accessed November 26, 2013]</ref> Teacher salaries are categorized based on higher education achievement, professional development and years of service. A teacher with a Bachelor's degree can earn higher salaries by pursuing graduate courses with raises at credit intervals. The salary schedule also accounts for graduate degrees by providing higher starting salaries and greater potential salaries. The following table details the salary schedule negotiated between the district and the Torrance Teachers Association for 2013-2014:<ref>[http://www.tusd.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=ps9jvmKUOig%3d&tabid=809 ''Torrance Unified School District,'' "Agreement between Torrance Unified School District and Torrance Teachers Association CTA/NEA," accessed January 13, 2014]</ref>

==Academic performance==
California's Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program, which includes the California Standards Tests (CST), the California Modified Assessment (CMA) and the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), measures the achievement of California content standards for grades 2-11. STAR results include English and mathematics in grades 2-11, science in grades 5 and 8-11 and history/social science in grades 8, 10 and 11. In high school, math and science tests reflect the course in which the student is enrolled. There are five STAR benchmarks to indicate a student's proficiency. "Proficient" or "Advanced" indicate that a student is meeting or exceeding state standards, which is the desired achievement goal for all students. The following table compares the percentage of district students who score at a "Proficient" or "Advanced" level with the statewide averages from the 2011-2012 school year.<ref>[http://www.ed-data.k12.ca.us/App_Resx/EdDataClassic/fsTwoPanel.aspx?#!bottom=/_layouts/EdDataClassic/Accountability/PerformanceReports.asp?tab=3&reportNumber=1&level=06&fyr=1112&county=19&district=65060 ''Ed-Data,'' "Student Performance - 2012," accessed January 7, 2013]</ref>

Academic performance

Each year, state and local education agencies use tests and other standards to assess student proficiency. Although the data below was published by the U.S. Department of Education, proficiency measurements are established by the states. As a result, proficiency levels are not comparable between different states and year-over-year proficiency levels within a district may not be comparable because states may change their proficiency measurements. To protect student privacy, percentages are reported as ranges for groups of 300 students or fewer. If five or fewer students were included in a data set, the data will display as "PS."[2]

The following table shows the percentage of district students who scored at or above the proficiency level each school year:

School year All (%) Asian/Pacific Islander (%) Black (%) Hispanic (%) Native American (%) Two or More Races (%) White (%)
