Berman's career in government began with the Ronald Reagan-George H.W. Bush transition team in 1980. Berman was the deputy to the director of the resources group for the team as well as the deputy director of the transition team.[3][4] In 1989, under George H.W. Bush, Berman served on the Commerce Department transition team and then, in 1989, served as counselor to the secretary of commerce.[4] In 1990, he was then appointed assistant secretary of commerce.[4] He served in that position until 1991.[3]

In 2001, Berman was a senior advisor for the George W. Bush-Dick Cheney transition team.[3]

Political campaigns

Having worked on several transition teams, including that of Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush, Berman has also worked on several campaigns. He worked in George H.W. Bush's 1988 campaign as senior staff and as the director of Congressional relations and was the vice presidential campaign director for Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign.[3][4][1]

In addition to presidential campaigns, Berman also worked on Republican National Committee campaigns. He was the deputy director and executive producer of the 1992 Republican National Convention as well as a fundraiser for the RNC.[3]

Lobbying and finance

In 1991, while working with the RNC, Berman was also a managing partner with America Mercantile Group until 1992. This was followed by six years at Berman Enterprises, which Berman founded and served as its managing director between 1993 and 1999.[3] In 1998, Berman also founded Highstar, a financial firm. He advised the firm's portfolio companies. Berman remains active with Hightstar, serving as a senior advisor.[3][5] In 1999, Berman founded Park Strategies, L.L.C. and was, for a time, the firm's managing director.[3]

In 2004, after Berman Enterprises merged with Ogilvy and Mather, a public relations, marketing, and advertising firm, Berman served as the chairman of Ogilvy's lobbying division.[6][7] In 2005, Ogilvy purchased the Federalist Group, a lobbying firm; Berman joined the Federalist Group after the acquisition.[3][8] In 2010, Berman joined Ogilvy's board.[7] However, in 2012, Berman left the firm and joined Blackstone.[9]

The financial and consulting firm Blackstone took on Berman in 2012; he serves as the firm's senior advisor of global government affairs.[1] He also serves as an senior external advisor for the financial investment firm Oaktree Capital.[10]
