Walton County School District is a school district in Georgia that served 13,337 K-12 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[1] The district educates more than 1,000 students in after-school programs as part of the 21st Century Grant Program.[2]

Walton County School District is located in Walton County, Georgia. The county seat of Walton County is Monroe, Georgia. Walton County was home to 85,754 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3]
Demographics
Walton County underperformed in comparison to the state of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.9 percent of Walton County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Walton County was $52,062, compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Walton County was 13.8 percent, compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[3]

Election dates
Members of the board are elected to four-year terms on a staggered basis. Three seats were up for election on November 4, 2014. Four seats were on the ballot in November 2016.
Public participation in board meetings
The board maintains the following policy regarding public participation in board meetings:

Meetings of the Board of Education are held to conduct the affairs and business of the school system. Although these meetings are not meetings of the public, the public is invited to attend all meetings and members of the public are invited to address the Board at appropriate times and in accordance with procedures established by the Board or the Superintendent. All presentations by the public to the Board are to be brief, clear and to the point, with the topic of the presentation being submitted in writing using a Visitor Comment Form which is available on the web site or at the Board office. Presentations are intended for the Board to hear comments or concerns without taking action. Unless an extension of time is granted, the presentation may not exceed three minutes. Time cannot be shared or passed to other citizens. Citizens may make reports, requests, or register concerns to the Board when it meets in regular session provided the citizen fills out a Visitor Comment Form and submits it to the Superintendent’s office no later than noon on Monday before the regularly scheduled Board meeting in order to ensure the Chain of Command has been followed per Board Policy CD. The Board will not consider or act on complaints that have not been explored at the appropriate administrative level or if the appropriate chain has not been attempted. Any item added to the agenda after the initial release of the agenda on Saturday morning will be eligible for visitor comments. A Visitor Comment Form regarding any added agenda item must be submitted to the Board Clerk prior to the start of the Board meeting. The Board chairperson, or other presiding officer, shall be responsible for calling on all speakers, for maintaining order, for adhering to the time limits set, and has the authority to terminate the remarks of any individual when he/she does not adhere to the rules and guidelines established. Criticism of school system personnel is not appropriate at public meetings. When acknowledged by the Board chairperson, or other presiding officer, a speaker shall give his or her name and the group, if any, that he or she is representing. Groups will be urged to designate a spokesperson. The individual should speak to the Board, not the audience. The topic should be the same as the one on the Visitor Comment Form. No profane and/or vulgar language or personal abuse against any person will be permitted. |

Academic performance
The Georgia Department of Education administers annual tests to students in grades three through eight called the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). These tests assess the proficiency of district students in five academic subjects including reading, English language arts (ELA), math, science and social studies. The CRCTs are designed to measure progress by students in topics covered by the Common Core State Standards. A student meets state proficiency goals with a score of 800 and exceeds state proficiency goals with a score of 850 or higher.
