Amendment XIII of the United States Constitution was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865. It was ratified December 6, 1865.

Part of Article IV, section 2, of the Constitution was superseded by Amendment XIII.

Text of Section 1:

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
