Mission

According to the Family Council website, the group's mission is as follows:[1]

Our mission is to promote, protect, and strengthen traditional family values found and reflected in the Bible by impacting public opinion and public policy in Arkansas.[2]

The Family Council Action Committee exists to lobby for or against ballot initiatives that, respectively, agree or disagree with the mission of the Family Council group.[3]

Background

Family Council was founded in 1989 by Jerry Cox. The group is part of a national network of state family policy councils associated with Focus on the Family.[1]

Work

The Family Council group aims to promote values that are "pro-life," "pro-marriage," and "pro-family" by advocating for and against legislation and ballot initiatives, as well as having a presence in the media. The Family Council website states the following about its work:

Pro-Life We are at the forefront of the fight to protect the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death. Over the years, we have secured passage of legislation to prevent partial-birth abortions, prevent the cloning of human embryos, prevent abortions without parental consent, prevent abortions without informed consent, and made physician-assisted suicide illegal. In addition we have worked to uphold the rights of nursing home patients and others in long-term care facilities.

Pro-Marriage Family Council is a leader in the fight to protect marriage. In 2004 we formed the Arkansas Marriage Amendment Committee and, after gathering over 200,000 petition signatures, we worked for the successful passage of a State Constitutional Amendment that defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The amendment passed with 75% of the vote.

Pro-Family Family Council is a leader in protecting the welfare of foster and adoptive children. In 2008 we worked with the Family Council Action Committee to secure passage of a state law that prevents adoptive or foster children from being placed with unmarried couples—gay or straight. The measure passed with 57% of the vote statewide. In addition, we have been a vocal opponent of the Arkansas Lottery and other forms of gambling.[2]

In 2016, Family Council Action Committee opposed the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act, designed to do the following three things:[4]

  • Set a cap on the fees required to get dispensary and cultivation licenses and the fees required for patient cards;
  • Dictate that the state's Department of Health must set rules for patient cards and medical conditions that qualify a patient for medical marijuana use;
  • Require that all sales tax revenue goes back into the medical marijuana program.

Jerry Cox, executive director for the Family Council Action Committee, said regarding the measure,[5]

This is simply a back-door way for otherwise healthy people to be able to buy marijuana, sell marijuana, smoke marijuana, use it in food, so forth and so on.[2]

Leadership

Jerry Cox is the executive director for the Family Council Action Committee and the founder and president of the Family Council organization.[5][6]
