Mark Serrott is a judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas General Division in Ohio. His current term ends on January 2, 2029.

Serrott (Nonpartisan, Democratic Party) ran for re-election for judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas General Division in Ohio. Serrott won in the general election on November 8, 2022. He advanced from the Democratic primary on May 3, 2022.

Serrott was elected to the court in November of 2010 and assumed the bench on January 3, 2011.[1]

Serrott ran for re-election in 2016.[2] The general election took place on November 8, 2016.

Biography

Education

Serrott received both his B.A. in 1975 and his J.D. in 1979 from the Ohio State University.[3]

Career

Before joining the court, Serrott practiced law for thirty-one years, specializing in employment law, criminal defense, contract disputes, domestic relations and juvenile cases, personal injury lawsuits.[3]

Selection method

The 391 judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are all selected in an identical manner. Qualified individuals wishing to join the bench must participate in partisan primary elections followed by nonpartisan general elections.[4]

The chief judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are chosen by peer vote and serve for one year.[4]

Qualifications
To serve on an appellate or general jurisdiction court, a judge must be:[4]

  • a district or county resident (for court of appeals and common pleas judges);
  • at least six years practiced in law; and
  • under the age of 70.

Under the Ohio Constitution, a judge who reaches 70 years of age may be assigned by the chief justice to active duty, receiving payment on a per-day basis in addition to whatever retirement benefits he or she is entitled to.

2010

Serrott ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. He defeated Patrick Piccininni in the general election, winning 57.31% of the vote.[5]
