I am Merika Goolsby. I am running for Oakland city council district 7 because I have witnessed the challenges we face with neglect, homelessness/housing insecurities, and underemployment just to name a few. Our community has been overlooked for far too long. I am running because it does not have to be like this. Change for the better is possible. Together we can break free from the same old gatekeepers and create a better future. I plan on raising the funds to add initiatives to get district 7 stable. We need affordable housing and employment. I plan to bring change we have been owed for over twenty years. When I was a little girl growing up in SF the messaging was for kids to do good in school, go to college, work hard and get out of the “ghetto”. After becoming an adult I began to ask the question, “If everyone works hard and leaves, who will stay to make things better? There needs to be people that stay and fight. That is what I am committed to doing in East Oakland’s district 7. We can restore Oakland pride and Ownership in our communities. Enough is enough!! I am stepping up to represent District 7 and our issues.
  • Affordable housing is top priority. Housing is a human right.
  • Employment is my second priority. On the job training that allows people to provide their basic needs will change how district 7 resident live.
  • Affordable housing and employment will get district 7 stable.
Housing, Employment, and Environmental Justice.
I look up to individuals who exemplify the strength and courage to stand firm in their beliefs and convictions, especially when faced with opposition. This admiration is particularly directed toward strong women in leadership and influential African-Americans who have made significant contributions in various domains.

One figure I deeply respect is Rosa Parks, whose quiet yet powerful act of defiance sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and became a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Her unwavering commitment to justice and equality, even in the face of adversity, serves as a profound example of standing up for one's beliefs.
Another inspiring leader is Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress. Her fearless advocacy for marginalized communities and her trailblazing run for the presidency in 1972 illustrate the importance of breaking barriers and fighting for one's convictions, regardless of the challenges encountered.
I also admire Angela Davis, a prominent activist and scholar who has dedicated her life to fighting for social justice, racial equality, and prison reform. Her ability to articulate her beliefs and mobilize others around critical issues serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one can have when standing strong in their principles.

These individuals inspire me to cultivate my own resilience and to advocate for what I believe in. Their journeys highlight the importance of perseverance, empathy, and activism, motivating me to contribute positively to my community and society as a whole. By following their examples, I hope to embody the values of strength and conviction in my own life, standing up for justice and equality even when faced with opposition.

The legacy I would like to leave focuses on creating a community where affordable housing is accessible, significantly reducing the homeless population. I envision a future where every individual has a safe and stable place to call home, which is vital for fostering dignity and well-being.

By prioritizing affordable housing initiatives, I aim to ensure that everyone in District 7 has the opportunity to secure a stable living environment. This foundation is crucial for enabling individuals to seek employment and contribute positively to society. I believe that when people are housed, they are more likely to find stable jobs, which in turn can lead to a thriving local economy.
In addition to increasing access to housing, my goal is to drastically raise employment levels in District 7. By collaborating with local businesses, educational institutions, and workforce development programs, I hope to create a robust job market that offers diverse opportunities for residents. This increased employment will not only empower individuals but also contribute to the overall economic stability of the district.
I also recognize that addressing homelessness and providing employment opportunities can lead to a significant reduction in crime rates. When individuals are not in desperate situations, they are less likely to engage in survival crimes driven by necessity. By creating an environment of stability and opportunity, we can foster safer neighborhoods and a stronger sense of community.

In summary, I aspire to leave a legacy of affordable housing, increased employment, and reduced crime in District 7, ultimately creating a more stable, prosperous, and compassionate community for all residents.
The first historical event that I vividly remember from my lifetime is the 1989 earthquake, specifically the Loma Prieta earthquake that struck on October 17. At the time, I was in elementary school and was at home doing my homework when it happened. Having been born and raised in San Francisco, the earthquake felt particularly significant to me.

I can still recall the moment the ground began to shake—initially a slight tremor that quickly escalated into a powerful jolt. The house shook, and I felt a sense of panic as objects rattled around me. I remember rushing to a doorway for safety, as we had been taught in school. After the shaking stopped, the silence was eerie, followed by the sounds of sirens and people outside.
The news coverage that followed was extensive, showing the destruction and chaos that unfolded across the Bay Area. I was struck by the images of collapsed structures and the stories of those affected. It was a sobering moment for my community, highlighting the vulnerability we all shared living in such a seismically active region.

In the aftermath, I noticed a heightened sense of awareness about earthquake preparedness in my family and among friends. People began discussing safety plans and emergency kits, and there was a collective effort to support those who had lost their homes or suffered injuries. This experience not only deepened my understanding of natural disasters but also fostered a sense of community resilience. The 1989 earthquake remains a defining moment in my childhood, shaping my perspective on safety and preparedness in the years to come.
My very first job was when I was 14 years old, and it involved going door-to-door selling newspaper subscriptions for the San Francisco Chronicle. I worked during the summer, which provided me with a unique opportunity to engage directly with my community. This experience taught me valuable skills in communication, sales techniques, and perseverance. Each day, I would set out with my materials, approaching homes and pitching the benefits of subscribing to the newspaper.

It was both exciting and challenging. I learned how to handle rejection gracefully and celebrate small victories when I successfully signed up a new subscriber. This job also helped me develop a sense of responsibility and independence, as I managed my own schedule and set goals for the number of subscriptions I aimed to sell each week. The interactions I had with different people gave me insight into diverse perspectives and the importance of effective communication.

The summer job was not just about making money; it was an invaluable learning experience that shaped my work ethic and confidence. I gained a sense of accomplishment from my efforts and learned the importance of hard work and determination. Looking back, my time selling newspaper subscriptions was a formative experience that laid the groundwork for many of the skills I would use in future endeavors. Overall, it was a memorable start to my journey in the workforce.

Thanks for my 2 year old grand daughter the last song that got stuck in my head is Baby Shark.
A significant struggle in my life has been time management, as balancing various responsibilities often leads to stress and inefficiency.
Financial transparency and government accountability are fundamental principles that underpin a healthy democracy and foster public trust. Financial transparency involves making government financial information accessible, understandable, and timely. This includes clear reporting on budgets, expenditures, and financial decisions, allowing citizens to see how public funds are being used. When government entities are transparent about their financial practices, it empowers citizens to hold their leaders accountable for their spending and decision-making. Accountability ensures that elected officials and government employees are answerable for their actions and decisions. This includes being willing to explain and justify their choices, particularly when it comes to the allocation of public resources. Accountability mechanisms, such as audits, public reporting, and oversight bodies, are essential for detecting and preventing corruption, mismanagement, or misuse of funds. Together, financial transparency and accountability promote trust between the government and its constituents. When citizens feel informed and assured that their leaders are acting in the public's best interest, they are more likely to engage in civic activities and support government initiatives. Moreover, these principles enhance the effectiveness of governance, as they encourage responsible budgeting, fiscal discipline, and strategic planning. Ultimately, fostering a culture of financial transparency and accountability is crucial for creating an engaged and informed electorate, ensuring that government actions align with the community's needs and values. It also lays the groundwork for ethical governance, reducing the risk of corruption and increasing public confidence in governmental institutions. In summary, these principles are vital for a functioning democracy and essential for effective public service.
