David Crockett grew up in Matewan, West Virginia; a small town with no stop lights and a significant place in history. For decades the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s feuded there in the 1800’s and in 1920 striking coal miners stood up for their rights and fought mine owners’ hired goons in the Battle of Matewan.

David has kept the fighting spirit of his hometown with him. He is one of fourteen children and from early on he has been a hard worker who began paying taxes at the age of 13. While still in high school he began classes at Southern West Virginia Community College.

He graduated from West Virginia University with a BA in English. Since graduating he has been committed to lifelong learning and teaching others. He was a teacher with Job Corp in Harpers Ferry; led a school-to-work program and managed on-site courses for Peirce College.

David has decades of experience as an advisor and manager providing affordable and quality healthcare primarily to commercial and government programs like Medicare and Medi-caid. recipients. His career took him and his family to Santa Ana over 11 years ago and is passionately committed and active in his adopted hometown.

David was elected to the Rancho Santiago Community College District in 2020 and served as the Boards Clerk and Vice President before becoming President of the Board in 2023. David also serves his hometown as a member of the Personal Board for City of Santa Ana.
Key policy issues for California community colleges include funding challenges tied to the Student-Centered Funding Formula, ensuring affordability, and addressing equity gaps in student success. Expanding workforce development, streamlining transfer pathways, and improving online education access are also priorities.

Other concerns include compensation for adjunct faculty, hiring more full-time instructors, and supporting adult learners with reskilling programs.

There’s a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), particularly for underserved students, and expanding dual enrollment for high school students.

These policies aim to enhance access, equity, and alignment with the state’s workforce and educational needs.
An elected official should possess a blend of personal, professional, and ethical qualities to succeed and gain trust of their constituents.

Those qualities include integrity, leadership, effective communication, empathy and problem solving. In addition, elected officials should also be open and transparent, have a vision and flexibility to adapt to the political landscape.
