Rob Kerth was first elected to the SMUD Board of Directors in 2008. He represents Ward 5, which includes Midtown, Downtown, North Sacramento, Natomas, Rio Linda and Elverta. During his tenure, SMUD has emerged as one of our country's most distinguished electric utilities.

Rob is a third-generation Sacramentan and former two-term city Councilman who got his start in public service as a neighborhood activist for the historic Woodlake neighborhood of North Sacramento. While on the Sacramento City Council, he was recognized as a major force for revitalization efforts not only in his district but also in other long-established neighborhoods. Rob also specialized in regional problem-solving. His assignments included the Sacramento Area Council of Governments, Sacramento Regional Transit District and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency. Kerth developed notable expertise on infrastructure issues throughout the six-county Sacramento region.

Rob has also served as an executive project leader at the Sacramento Tree Foundation, the executive director of the Midtown Business Association, and the executive director of Sacramento Habitat for Humanity.

Rob founded Ice Unlimited, which brought Sacramento and Folsom their original holiday ice rinks.

A graduate of Stanford University, Kerth holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering.

He and his family still live in Woodlake, his family's home neighborhood for more than 100 years.
  • SMUD must continue to lead with the lowest rates, best customer service, and best reliability in California.
  • SMUD will continue to lead the charge to revitalize under-resourced communities.
  • SMUD will achieve Zero Carbon energy supply by 2030.
I am most passionate about affordable, reliable, clean energy, about re-invigorating neglected communities and the people who call them home, and about reaching zero carbon energy supply.
As a special purpose government, SMUD's only requirement is to provide electrical power. What makes SMUD special is the agency-wide conviction that clean, reliable, affordable power is vital to our community's prosperity, and that SMUD will deliver it.
My Dad, because he was so wonderfully clever and creative, my Mom because she is an unfailing supporter of the hopes of others, and Mayor Joe Serna because he never failed to put the people he served first.
Great listening and teaching skills, an abiding sense of fairness, the ability to eke out progress in a complicated world, brevity, and stamina.
I am an unassuming listener so I can hear people's hopes for SMUD. I am a patient teacher so I can coax the government staff to deliver what people hope for. I can understand extremely complex things and weigh the many consequences of change. I have the stamina to keep going. I love improving our community.
Elected officials should listen carefully to all sides, and weigh each of the thoughts, opinions, and hopes for our community before deciding a course of action.
When I started on the SMUD Board, it was a quality regional utility. Today SMUD is a national model, widely considered one of America's leading utilities. I am not done yet. I want to add that SMUD also provides the most green and carbon-free power.
I was an ice mole. My family built the American Ice Company on Del Paso Boulevard. My whole family helped operate it. At the end of the day, scrap ice left over from production would collect under the manufacturing equipment, affectionately name The Crusher, in the cold storage room. When I was eight years old, I was still small enough to fit under The Crusher and push the scrap ice out behind me as I crawled in, like a mole shoves dirt behind them as they tunnel.

It was a bittersweet day when I couldn't fit anymore.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It is about simple people, with some great help along the way, setting things right.
No way am I answering this! Then it will get stuck again.
Focus. There are so many exciting things going on in our region, I am easily drawn into too many projects.
SMUD does a great job providing power and helping people to succeed. This quality performance gives SMUD Boardmembers the chance to convene leaders from across the region to tackle larger issues.
Yes. The government, and the roll of elected officials in the government, is complicated. After years of study, a dedicated elected leader will finally understand how to make progress for their communities.
Listening and teaching skills, the ability to understand the workings of complicated systems, fairness, and the humility to put the needs of the community first.
SMUD touches everyone, every day, all the time. SMUD is a second-by-second factor in the success and prosperity of our region. For our region to succeed, SMUD has to do a great job.
None are coming to mind (that bear repeating).

County Supervisors Patrick Kennedy & Phil Serna
Councilmembers Steve Cohn, Rob Fong, Eric Guerra, Rick Jennings, Lisa Kaplan, Caity Maple, Verna Sculpizio, Karina Talamantes, Ray Tretheway, Katie Valenzuela, Mai Vang

Of course, the government should be an open book, but that isn't enough. Many of the best practices of good governments are hard to understand. Governments need to present the information in clear and accessible formats, so that the information makes sense without grueling study.
