Each year, state and local education agencies use tests and other standards to assess student proficiency. Although the data below was published by the U.S. Department of Education, proficiency measurements are established by the states. As a result, proficiency levels are not comparable between different states and year-over-year proficiency levels within a district may not be comparable because states may change their proficiency measurements.[9]

Noteworthy events
An effort to recall three of the five members of the Fairfax Elementary School District board of trustees did not go to a vote in 2021. Recall supporters did not collect enough signatures by the submission deadline.[10]
The recall effort began in May 2021. Palmer Moland, Alma Rios, and Jose Luis Tapia were named in the notices of intent to recall.[1][11] To get the recall on the ballot, recall supporters would have had to submit petitions with 1,451 signatures by September 26, 2021.[10][12]
Recall supporters accused Moland, Rios, and Tapia of "poor leadership, self-interest and vengeful behavior." All three board members declined to comment on the recall effort.[1]
