The Baldwin School District announced on Monday, June 4, that it would ask voters to approve a $22.9 million school bond issue.[1] The Baldwin school district serves the Baldwin City area in Kansas. The school board met on June 23 to pass forward the resolution, which was approved by voters in November. Throughout the discussion of the school board, the bond measure grew from an initial proposal of $22.5 to $22.9 million.
The bond passed 54 percent to 46 percent in the November election.[2]
Proposed use of Baldwin bond issue
The proposed $22.9 million was allocated to fund the following projects:
- Brand new 480 student elementary school housing BESPC, 4-year old kindergarten, parent & teachers organization and the rainbow experience school
- 10,000 square foot performing arts center to hold up to 600 people
- Four baseball and softball fields
- Practice track and field
- New roof and HVAC for Baldwin Junior middle school
Issues
A dispute arose around the extra costs of the road designed to make the new elementary school accessible to existing streets. The street extension was expected to cost about $1.2 million.[3]
