Kentucky court system requests $62 million budget increase

FRANKFORT Kentucky: Kentucky Supreme Court chief justice John Minton has asked the Kentucky state legislature for an additional $62 million for the state court system in the next fiscal year.[1] The judiciary has a $316.3 million budget for 2012, which it is seeking to increase by $62.2 million in 2013 and $66.9 million in 2014.[2] The money would be used for a new computer system, 25 additional staffers, pay raises for court workers, new family court judges, and two new courthouses. $20 million of the $62 million requested increase is for new projects, while the remaining money would cover increased costs such as healthcare and retirement contributions. Minton said, "My responsibilities extend beyond balancing today’s budget."[2]
