Two seats on the Christina School District school board were up for general election on May 13, 2014. Incumbent John M. Young defeated challenger Martin W. Nicholson to retain the Nominating District D seat. Fellow board member Elizabeth C. Paige ran unopposed and won the Nominating District F seat by default without an election.

Christina School District is located in New Castle County, Delaware. The county seat of New Castle County is Wilmington. According to the United States Census Bureau, New Castle County is home to 538,479 residents.[1] Christina School District was the largest school district in Delaware, serving 17,400 students during the 2013-2014 school year.[2]

Demographics

New Castle County outperformed in comparison to the rest of Delaware in terms of higher education achievement in 2010. The United States Census Bureau found that 28.6 percent of New Castle County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 28.5 percent for Delaware as a whole. The median household income in New Castle was $54,236 compared to $60,119 for the state of Delaware. The poverty rate in New Castle County was 12.5 percent compared to 11.5 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Christina School District School Board consists of seven members elected to five-year terms in separate geographic districts. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 13, 2014.[3] Two seats were on the ballot in 2014. One seat will be on the ballot in 2015, and one seat will be on the ballot in 2016.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on February 5, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[5]
