Three seats on the Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
District 1 incumbent Kelly Smith defeated challengers Larry Barber, Chuck Holloway, Ray McConn and Joshua Paul. Brandon Shurr lost to board member Jeannine Butler for the District 7 seat. District 3 incumbent Martha Street ran unopposed and won re-election to her seat.[1]
About the district
Monroe County Community School Corporation is located in Monroe County, Indiana. The county seat is Bloomington. Monroe County is home to 141,888 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Monroe County Community School Corporation was the 19th-largest school district in Indiana and served 10,794 students.[3]
Demographics
Monroe County overperformed compared to the rest of Indiana in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 43.3 percent of Monroe County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.0 percent for Indiana as a whole. The median household income for Monroe County was $38,675 compared to $48,374 for the state of Indiana. The percentage of people below poverty level for Monroe County was 25.0 percent while it was 14.7 percent for the state of Indiana.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Monroe County Board of School Trustees consists of seven members elected by specific geographic district to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on July 23, 2014, and ended on August 22, 2014. Write-in candidates also had to file by August 22, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[5]

Endorsements
District 1 incumbent Kelly Smith and District 7 incumbent Jeannine Butler each received an endorsement from the White River Central Labor Council AFL-CIO.[6]
