Mountlake Terrace City Civic Center Bond Measure (April 2013)

A Mountlake Terrace City Civic Center Bond proposition was defeated on the April 23, 2013, election ballot in Snohomish County, which is in Washington.
If approved, this measure would have authorized the City of Mountlake Terrace to increase its debt by $25 million through issuing general obligation bonds in that amount in order to fund the construction of a new civic center.
This measure requires a 60% majority vote and at least a 40% voter turn out for approval.[1]

Language on the ballot:
| “ | The City Council of the City of Mountlake Terrace adopted Ordinance No. 2610 concerning financing a civic center. If approved, this proposition would authorize the City to issue bonds to construct a new civic center, including a community/senior center, police station, city offices, and library improvements. It would authorize the issuance of not more than $25,000,000 of general obligation bonds maturing within 30 years or less, and authorize the annual levy of excess property taxes to pay and retire such bonds, all as provided in Ordinance 2610. Should this proposition be approved?

Support
Supporters of the bond measure, especially the group "yes for MLT," argue that now is a good time to build as costs are low and that it is important to have the City civic center on city land instead of renting as the city has been doing for years.[3]

Opposition
The group "Citizens Against Prop. 1" argues that this measure asks for too much money, as have the two similar rejected bond measure before it, and that many of the proposed projects are unnecessary.
