Biography

Brandaun Dean was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Dean earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Howard University in 2014. His career experience includes working as an organizer with the American Federation of Teachers and SEIU and serving as the mayor of Brighton, Alabama. Dean co-founded and served as the chairman of Campaign X.

Collectivist, former organizer with American Federation of Teachers, Brighton Mayor (2016-2017), choice advocate.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

• We must take seriously our responsibility to uphold the Democratic temple.
• Reparations is a debt that is owed.
• We must not enter into a new global conflict, except conflict that would eradicate poverty.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

“Reproductive Justice (RJ) is a collective framework grounded in human rights and Black Feminist theory that centers the intersectional impact of race and gender in one’s ability to live free from individual-, community-, and state-sanctioned oppression so that we can create and nurture the family of their choosing and achieve optimum mental, physical, community and economic health.”

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Harriet Tubman got shit done.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Moral leadership and consistency.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first historical event I recall was the death of comedian Redd Foxx. My father and I watched reruns of his shows everyday. When he died I felt I’d lost an ornery old pal.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I was an intern at Brighton Middle School the summer after my eighth grade middle school graduation.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

A cartoon animation of a McLaren sports car.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Thuggish Thuggish Bone

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

I am a survivor of displacement and racially charged conspirational malice.

What qualities does the U.S. Senate possess that makes it unique as an institution?

I’ve won a competitive election as a first time candidate. I have ranging experience in the culture of the Douglass Common Wealth. I’ve been a lifelong student of the U.S. Senate.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for senators to have previous experience in government or politics?

I think experience that qualifies one for Senatorial service is unique to each soul.

How would you evaluate a judicial nominee?

I prefer to consider nominees from public defense and lower court backgrounds .
