Mission

In July 2018, Walmart's website had the following mission statement:[1]

What started small, with a single discount store and the simple idea of selling more for less, has grown over the last 50 years into the largest retailer in the world. Each week, nearly 270 million customers and members visit our more than 11,700 stores under 65 banners in 28 countries and eCommerce websites. With fiscal year 2018 revenue of $500.3 billion, Walmart employs approximately 2.3 million associates worldwide. Walmart continues to be a leader in sustainability, corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity. It’s all part of our unwavering commitment to creating opportunities and bringing value to customers and communities around the world.[2]

Background

Sam Walton opened the first Walmart in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. The company went public in 1970. In 1991, the first Walmart outside the United States was opened in Mexico. Walmart.com was founded in 2000, allowing the store to sell as an online retailer.[3]
