|My career has been in education. I earned Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees. I am part of the faculty in the Family & Consumer Studies Dept at the University of Utah where I have taught for nearly 20 years. I am also an ongoing family life contributor on ABC4’s “Good Things Utah” morning show. I am an experienced city council member, family policy authority and active community volunteer.
My husband and I make a great team raising our 4 children.- ETHICAL, BALANCED, MODERATE GOVERNMENT:
Our government is designed using a 2-party system where the three branches of government balance each other.
When it’s working, both political parties have a voice in debate. When it’s working, the executive and judicial branches can check the power of the legislature. The current system is NOT WORKING.
The Utah GOP has a supermajority of seats in the Senate. With a supermajority, GOP leaders DO NOT need to listen to the other side in policymaking. They DO NOT need to collaborate. They DO NOT have to worry about the executive branch veto because they can override. And they continue to misuse this power. My goal is to disrupt the supermajority and shift the legislature back to the moderate middle. - ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY: Rising costs mean that our children will grow up in a world with fewer opportunities for housing, education and employment than past generations. I believe government should create policies that support every day, working families and individuals through lowered tax burdens on lower- and middle-income families; increased wages; housing affordability; safe schools, improved access to healthcare including mental health and reproductive care; and a healthy environment we can pass on to the next generation. I am committed to cross-party collaboration to create practical solutions, not partisan agendas or blockades.
- EDUCATION: Utah children deserve great schools with skilled, happy teachers and staff. Under-funding has left a heavy burden on schools, volunteers and families. ALL school employees deserve respect and fair pay. I will prioritize wage increases for para-educators, admin and support staff. We should raise the floor on wages, not just the ceiling. The legislature oversteps when dictating policy that should be left to state and local school boards. I want to shift power back to our local leaders and educators. Public education is a valuable community resource, worth the investment. Public funds should stay in public schools. Every student deserves to be safe at school and free from discrimination. I believe in respect and dignity for all.
The primary responsibility of the state legislature is to manage the state budget. Where our money goes, our values are revealed. As an experienced city council member, I have seen how public funds are allocated and what it’s like to have to make important cuts or expensive decisions. In fiscal responsibility, I prioritize essential government operations and services, public safety, and resources for citizens.
I’m grateful for the work ethic I learned early but was only able to climb an upward ladder because of education programs and interventions designed for underprivileged students. I am a grateful recipient of that support. I believe in self-reliance AND intervention and safety nets to help balance economic opportunities.
I proudly serve on the North Salt Lake City Council where I’ve handled budgeting and worked on policy surrounding planning, public works projects, public safety, and more. Before city council, I was an NSL Planning Commissioner where I made decisions about code changes, variances and redevelopment. This experience in public budgets and land use positions me to dive into policy work with a solid foundation and a deep understanding of the issues at hand.
