This week's question was, What state other than South Dakota taxes groceries at the full sales tax rate?

You answered: New York
The correct answer is Mississippi.

Forty-five states collect a statewide sales tax, but only 13 apply at least part of the tax to groceries. Of those 13, Mississippi and South Dakota are the only two that apply the full tax to grocery sales.[1][2] As of May 2024, Mississippi's statewide sales tax is 7% and South Dakota's is 4.2%.[1]

Thirty-two of the 45 states with a statewide sales tax exempt groceries from the tax altogether.

On May 3, 1921, West Virginia became the first state to adopt a statewide sales tax.[3] South Dakota imposed a statewide sales tax in 1933.[4] Vermont was the most recent state to adopt a statewide sales tax, and it did so in 1969.

As of May 17, 2024, South Dakota Initiated Measure 28, Prohibit Food and Grocery Taxes Initiative is one of 106 measures in 35 states certified for statewide ballots in 2024. The South Dakota Secretary of State's Office announced on May 14 that it had verified enough signatures to certify Measure 28 for a vote in November.[5] South Dakota citizens will decide three other measures in November.
