Which state has lost the most DNC delegates since the 2016 convention?
a. California
b. Florida
c. Texas
d. Wisconsin
This year's Democratic National Convention was held July 13-16 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There were 4,750 delegates to the 2020 Democratic National Convention, down from 4,763 in 2016. Twenty-three states gained delegates between 2016 and 2020, while 21 states lost delegates. All but nine states gained or lost five or fewer delegates. California had the greatest change in its delegate count, having lost 57 delegates relative to its 2016 allocation.
Delegates are individuals chosen to represent their state at their party's national nominating convention. They are typically party activists, local political leaders, or early supporters of a particular presidential candidate. They are either selected in primaries, caucuses, or local party conventions, or included because of their positions as elected representatives or members of the party leadership.[1]
The number of delegates awarded to each state is determined by a formula that factors the state's popular vote for the Democratic nominee in the previous three elections, the state's electoral votes, and when the state's primary is held.[2]
New York gained the most delegates between 2016 and 2020, with an increase of 29 delegates. Virginia had 16 more delegates, while Texas gained 10 and Kansas gained eight. Other than California, the state with the greatest decrease in delegate totals was Washington, which lost 10 delegates. Ohio followed with a loss of seven delegates, while Arizona and Missouri lost six each.
