Ballotpedia's Daily Brew

This week's question was, Before this week, when was the last time a city official faced a recall election in San Francisco?

You answered: 1999.
The correct answer was 1983.

Last Tuesday, Feb. 15, voters in San Francisco, California, voted to recall three school board members: Gabriella López, Alison Collins, and Faauuga Moliga. Before this, the last San Francisco official to face a recall election was then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein, in 1983. Feinstein defeated the recall with 81% of the vote in her favor.[1]

Looking at school board recalls more broadly, starting off 2022, Ballotpedia has already identified 26 school board recall efforts, more than the total number of recall efforts identified in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017, and 2019. This comes after 2021 when Ballotpedia identified 92 total school board recalls, the largest number tracked since at least 2009.

The chart below details how many recall efforts were tracked each year. The 2022 numbers were current as of February 17, 2022.

Note: If a recall effort spanned multiple years, it was counted each year.
