This week's question was, How many state legislative incumbents lost in general elections (so far)?
You answered: 164.
You are correct!
In the 2022 general elections, at least 164 state legislative incumbents lost to challengers, 3.6% of incumbents running for re-election. This is both the lowest number and percentage of incumbents defeated in general elections since at least 2010. Races involving 32 incumbents remained uncalled as of Dec. 7.
The chart below shows a partisan breakdown of incumbent general election defeats from 2010 to 2022.
The 2022 cycle also represents the first since Ballotpedia began collecting incumbent defeated data in 2010 where the number of state legislative incumbents defeated in primaries was larger than that in general elections: 229 incumbents lost to primary challengers this year.
Thanks for your response!
