By The Ballot Measures Team In 2019, Ballotpedia covered local ballot measures on the ballot in the top 100 largest cities in the U.S. Ballotpedia also covered all of the local measures in California and North Carolina.

Within the Top 100 largest cities outside of California, Ballotpedia covered 175 local ballot measures in 2019 on ballots at over 20 different election dates in 21 different states.

Measures by status

Of the total 175 local measures, 149 were approved, and 26 were defeated.

Notable measures

  • On November 5, New York City voters approved five ballot questions comprised of 19 proposals, including a proposal to establish a ranked-choice voting (RCV) system for all city primary and special elections. With the approval of Question 1, New York City became the most populous jurisdiction in the U.S. to use RCV.
  • Tucson voters rejected Proposition 205, a citizen-initiative proposing to declare Tucson a sanctuary city.
  • Albuquerque would have become the second city (after Seattle) to adopt government-disbursed vouchers, known as democracy dollars, that voters could contribute to candidates if Proposition 2 had been approved; it was defeated by 51% to 49%.
  • On August 27, Phoenix, Arizona, voters rejected Proposition 106, an initiative concerning pension debt and the city's budget growth. Phoenix voters also defeated Proposition 105, an initiative to end funding for light rail expansion and direct funds to other transportation infrastructure.
