Barney Gottstein is the owner of Carr Gottstein Properties, a real estate development and property management firm in south-central Alaska. He is a former Democratic national committeeman and a former chairman of the Democratic Party of Alaska.
Career
Barney Gottstein began working as the manager of JB Gottstein & Company, his father's wholesale grocery and supply store, in 1947. Gottstein and Larry Carr, the owner of a local grocery store chain, started to purchase and manage property during the 1960s. In 1974, Gottstein and Carr merged their businesses and created the Carr Gottstein Company. The company sold the grocery division in 1990 and became Carr Gottstein Properties.[1]
Gottstein has been a prominent figure in Alaska's Democratic politics. He served as the state's Democratic national committeeman, as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and as chairman of the Democratic Party of Alaska. Gottstein has also worked on political strategy for campaigns at the local, state and federal levels.[2]
In 2014, Gottstein contributed to the Vote Yes initiative, a campaign to approve Ballot Measure 1 during the November election cycle. Ballot Measure 1 was an unsuccessful veto referendum aimed at repealing tax breaks for oil companies that were instituted by the Alaska State Legislature. Gottstein also contributed to Your Future Alaska, a political action committee that aimed to support the 2014 election of Independent Governor of Alaska Bill Walker.[3][4]
Awards and philanthropy
Gottstein was named to the Alaska Business Hall of Fame in 1989. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in 1991. In 2013, Campaigns & Elections magazine named Gottstein to the Influencers 500—a list of key Democratic and Republican political influencers in each state—for his work in Democratic Alaska politics.[2] [5]
The Barney and Rachel Gottstein Scholarship was established in 2005 and offers financial assistance to "Alaska Native students at Alaska Pacific University who intend to teach in rural Alaska."[6]
