Four of the seven seats on the Johnston County Schools school board were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. The seats of Donna White, Keith Branch, Peggy Smith, and Mike Wooten were up for election. Incumbents Smith and Wooten filed for re-election and were joined by nine candidates in the primary race for the seats on March 15, 2016: Dale Bender, John Taylor Brantley, Teresa Grant, Summer Hamrick, Jeffrey Jennings, Ronald Johnson, Crystal Kimpson Roberts, Todd Sutton, and Chip Swartz. Eight of the 11 candidates won and advanced to the general. Both incumbents Wooten and Smith were victorious and were joined on the general ballot by Jennings, Grant, Johnson, Sutton, Hamrick, and Roberts. Johnson, Grant, Smith, and Wooten won the general election.[1][2]

Funding

School board candidates in North Carolina are required to file campaign finance reports to their county's board of elections unless the candidate:

(1) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in contributions, and

(2) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in loans, and

(3) Does not spend more than one thousand dollars ($1,000).[3]

The first quarter campaign finance deadline was on March 7, 2016.
