As a dedicated MPA student and a proud member of the Independent / non-partisan community, I am passionate about creating a more inclusive and equitable San Jacinto for all. My journey, enriched by my academic and volunteer experiences, has deeply informed my approach to key issues facing our community.

A city council is part of local government and possesses several unique qualities that make it an essential component of both the state government and the legal system. One of the most significant advantages of city councils is their proximity to citizens. As directly elected representatives, city council members have a solid connection to their constituents and a deep understanding of local needs and concerns. This accessibility makes it easier for residents to voice their opinions and advocate for their interests. City councils also have a focus on local issues. Unlike state or federal governments, city councils can address specific local concerns and implement tailored policies that directly benefit their communities. This allows for a more responsive and effective form of governance.

Another key quality of city councils is their flexibility and adaptability. City councils can often respond more quickly to emerging issues or crises than larger governmental bodies, allowing them to address problems promptly and effectively. Their deep understanding of the local context enables them to tailor their policies and initiatives accordingly.

City councils play a crucial role in the broader political landscape. They serve as testing grounds for new policies and initiatives, providing valuable data and insights for state and federal governments. Additionally, city councils can provide input on state legislation that affects their communities, ensuring that local perspectives are considered.

From a legal standpoint, city councils have significant authority and responsibilities. They have the power to enact local laws and ordinances, regulating various aspects of community life. City councils are also responsible for approving the city budget and allocating resources to different departments and services. Moreover, they have oversight responsibilities over city departments and agencies, ensuring that they are operating efficiently and effectively.
I look up to people who display empathy, kindness, and integrity. My grandmothers were excellent examples of these qualities. Their guidance and support were invaluable to me, and I strive to live my life in a way that would make them proud. I believe that these traits are essential for building strong relationships, making a positive impact on the world, and living a fulfilling life.

My very first job was working at my family's grocery store/market, which was owned and operated by my maternal grandparents. These experiences have helped me develop a deep understanding of the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equality. My journey has prepared me to effectively advocate for marginalized communities and work towards creating a more just and equitable society.
While many people are aware of the general responsibilities of a city council, there are often lesser-known powers and duties that can significantly impact a community. Here are a few examples:

Zoning and Land Use: City councils often have the power to shape the future of their communities through zoning regulations and land use planning. This includes determining where residential, commercial, and industrial areas are located and preserving historic districts.
Public Safety: City councils are responsible for developing and implementing emergency management plans to prepare for and respond to natural disasters or other emergencies. In some jurisdictions, they also have oversight over the local police department, setting policies and procedures.

Public Utilities: City councils can have the power to regulate public utilities, such as water, electricity, and gas, ensuring that they provide reliable and affordable services. They are also often responsible for planning and overseeing the development of infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and public transportation.

Cultural and Recreational Programs: City councils can oversee the development and maintenance of parks, recreational facilities, and cultural programs. They can also support the arts and culture scene by funding programs, events, and public art projects.

Intergovernmental Relations: City councils can participate in regional planning and cooperation efforts, working with other local governments to address shared challenges. They can also advocate for their communities by lobbying state and federal governments for funding, legislation, or other support.

These are just a few examples of the lesser-known powers and responsibilities held by city councils. By understanding these additional roles, citizens can become more engaged and informed participants in their local government.
While previous experience in government or politics can certainly be beneficial for a city council member, I believe that it is not a prerequisite. What is most important is a deep understanding of the community and a passion for public service. Experience in government or politics can provide valuable insights into the workings of government, the legislative process, and the challenges of public service. It can also help individuals build relationships with other elected officials and stakeholders. However, it is important to note that fresh perspectives and diverse experiences can also be valuable assets for a city council member.

Ultimately, the most important qualities for a successful city council member are integrity, leadership, effective communication, and a commitment to serving the community. Whether or not a candidate has previous experience in government or politics, they should demonstrate these qualities and a willingness to learn and grow in their role.
A city council member plays a vital role in shaping the future of their community. To effectively fulfill this role, they must possess a diverse range of skills and expertise. Leadership and communication are essential for a city council member. They must be able to inspire and motivate others, make decisions, and take responsibility. Effective communication is also crucial, as city council members must be able to convey complex ideas to their constituents and colleagues in a clear and engaging manner. Problem-solving and critical thinking are equally important. City council members must be able to analyze complex problems, identify potential solutions, and evaluate information to make informed decisions. They should also be able to work collaboratively with others to find common ground and achieve shared goals. Policy understanding is another essential skill. City council members must have a basic understanding of how government works, including the legislative process and the role of different government agencies. They should also be able to analyze and understand public policy issues, such as zoning, budgeting, and public safety. Community engagement is crucial for a successful city council member. They must be able to build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, reach out to community members to understand their needs and concerns, and work collaboratively to achieve shared goals.

Finally, financial management is an important skill for a city council member. They must have a basic understanding of budgeting and financial management, and they must be committed to using public funds wisely and responsibly.

By possessing these skills and expertise, city council members can effectively represent their constituents, address community challenges, and make a positive impact on their local government.

In conclusion, city councils offer a unique blend of proximity to citizens, focus on local issues, flexibility and adaptability, input into state and federal policy, and legal authority. These qualities make them essential components of the state government and legal system, providing a direct link between citizens and their government and contributing to the overall well-being of their communities.
I tried starting a hot air balloon business, but it never took off.
I believe that financial transparency and government accountability are essential for a functioning democracy. Citizens have the right to know how their tax dollars are being used, and government officials have a responsibility to be open and honest about their finances.

Financial transparency is crucial for preventing corruption and ensuring that public resources are being used effectively. When governments are transparent about their finances, it allows citizens to hold them accountable and demand that they use taxpayer money wisely.

Government accountability is equally important. Elected officials should be held accountable for their actions and decisions, especially when it comes to matters of public finance. This includes being transparent about their own financial interests and avoiding conflicts of interest.

I believe that independent audits, public records laws, and open government initiatives are essential tools for promoting financial transparency and government accountability. By making government information accessible to the public, we can empower citizens to hold their elected officials accountable and ensure that our democracy is functioning as it should.
