Three of seven seats on the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District school board in Alaska were up for at-large general election on October 3, 2017. Two incumbents filed for re-election.[1] Incumbent Sean Rice defeated challenger Deborah Rinio in the Seat F race. Seat G incumbent Wendy Charmaine Dominique retained her seat after being challenged by former candidate Jodi Rhoades. The Seat E incumbent did not file for re-election, leaving the seat open. Newcomer Tim Doran defeated fellow newcomers Mat Wade, Chrya Sanderson, and Michael Kenna to win his first term.[2]
With four candidates, Seat E drew the highest number of candidates Fairbanks North Star Borough School District had seen since the municipal election in 1997, when five candidates filed for Seat A.[3]

Voter and candidate information
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Board of Education consists of seven unpaid members elected to three-year terms. Elections are held on a staggered basis every year on the first Tuesday in October. All members are elected at large to specific districts. There was no primary election, and the general election for three seats was October 3, 2017.
Candidates had to be registered voters of Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Candidates had from July 17, 2017, until July 31, 2017, to file for election and withdraw their candidacy.[4][5]
To vote in this election, citizens of the school district had to register by September 3, 2017.[6] Personal identification was required to vote in this election. This can be a form of current or valid photo identification or current utility bill, paycheck, or government issued document.[7]

Campaign finance
There were three campaign finance deadlines for Alaska school board candidates in 2017:[8]
- The 30 Day Report was due September 5, 2017,
- The 7 Day Report was due September 26, 2017, and
- The 105 Day Report was due January 16, 2018.
If candidates receive contributions of more than $250 in the nine days before an election, they must report them to the Alaska Public Offices Commission within 24 hours of accepting the contribution.
Candidates who did not expect to receive or spend more than $5,000 during both their primary and general election campaigns could file a form with the Alaska Public Offices Commission declaring this intent. If candidates then did not receive or spend more than $5,000 during the primary and general election, they did not need to make a full report of their contributions and expenditures.[9]

Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is located in eastern Alaska in Fairbanks North Star Borough. The borough seat is Fairbanks. The borough was home to 99,631 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[10] The district was the third-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 13,863 students.[11]
Demographics
Fairbanks North Star Borough outperformed Alaska as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.5 percent of borough residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.7 percent of state residents. The median household income in the borough was $70,408, compared to $71,829 for the state. The poverty rate in the borough was 9.5 percent, while it was 11.2 percent for the entire state.[10]
