Relevant experience: I have spent thirteen years in various classrooms learning environments. Direct personal experience within public education, and within the University of Wisconsin (both Green Bay and Oshkosh) system during my college years. I am a volunteer who promotes technology, and donates time regularly to help organizations and people that need it. As a business owner, I have experience in accounting, operations, legal, human resources, management, and executive management. Finally, as a subject matter expert within the technology industry, I have a strong skill set for details. During the past decade, I have served in a volunteer role working with mentally ill individuals. Serving in this role has enabled me to open up strong communication with others regarding a varying degree of disorders. Further it has allowed me to develop a strong understanding of the needs our district lacks when assisting the mentally ill.
To change any behavior in any population, you must first change the social environment. During various district interactions I have realized “while the district may be open and listening,” they are doing little to act. The district is simply stating this to relieve media pressure and buy time. The end result: nothing is accomplished that benefits the student population. The role of any school board is to manage, supervise, and control district operations. What it also means is that the superintendent is directly under the supervision of the board – always. In Green Bay, the board fails to lead and uphold supervision of the superintendent. A single page performance review, and they failed to release this before extending a contract extension. The wording within the school board handbook contains language that attempts to minimizes the role of the school board. This demonstrates a true lack of accountability for the law, and that must be resolved within the district. That reason is a major and significant factor for running. The second is that if we are going to change the social environment of the schools, that this must start at the top. We need board members in our schools, interfacing directly with teachers, principals, and supervisors, it helps to show accountability in place. This helps student population see a greater role of care by district leaders. This in turn will help improve the social environment. Doing so will start to evoke change in a positive manner. Many problems and behaviors will start to self-correct. Finally, if public education is responsible to the public, then the public schools need to be more open to the public. The term student safety is turning into a buzz-word to separate parent from teachers. The district has a significant problem with secrecy, bullying, intimidating practices, and also appears to be reactionary, only to relieve media pressure. Teachers are an incredible asset to our district, and therefore must be shown that their leadership is also beneficial in the classroom. They need to be given assistance to ensure their classroom order is kept. Teachers should not be bullied by district officials. Additionally, the school board should not be intimidated by the superintendent, district legal department, or public relations. For any effective institution to function, it requires a group of leaders who do not follow. I will strongly voice my concerns always, and I will work to advocate for others where appropriate and necessary. Doing so in a manner that promotes the best outcomes for the student population. Are you satisfied with the district’s response to student behavior and discipline issues at Washington Middle School? Why or why not? I believe the district is only being reactionary due to media attention and public pressure regarding Washington. Washington Middle School is however, a barometer to broader and more wide-ranging accountability problems plaguing the district in numerous ways. The better question here is: “Does the Green Bay Area Public Schools conduct themselves in a manner consistent with a school district accountable to students?” Simply stated, is the problem really a superintendent that is not asking the right questions? When an individual’s entire career is spent within a single career focus, you simply loose sight of the “big picture.” Resulting decisions are based upon a single scope, rather than a multi-variable view. This is a huge disability as the scale of an organization increases. I desire to dramatically shift duplicate positions within the district into roles that benefit our students. Sometimes, the right person in the wrong role can be a great asset in another position. I can provide vast experience of management into this position. Dr. Langenfeld was awarded by the state of Minnesota for turning around an at-risk middle school. Therefore, we have a local expert who should be capable of turning the school around. However, in the latest district press conference, the board idly sat by and watched as there was an announcement by the district superintendent to nationally seek out an expert in school turn around. Incorporating my comments above, this is a perfect example of “singular focus.” When you are the leader, and you have the necessary skills to solve a problem: you do it. When you truly believe in what you do, you also realize it isn’t about reducing your leadership, it is about creating a success story from within. This is the difference between being stagnate and having vision. What do you consider to be the key issue or issues in this race and what would you do to address them? Key issues are simple: The social environment. Until the social environment of the district is changed, there will be no ability to change behavior. Within an institution of learning, there are many rules to follow and without question. We must consider that the district has influence over many of those. Teachers who bully each other on social media, or even bully candidates running for school board serve only a singular focus — themselves. To make our district more attractive to others and reduce those who are opting for school choice, we must simply change the environment. Once done, so much will fall into place by itself. The premediated effort put into overly complicating the district needs to change. Our social walls must come down, and the board needs to be willing to either work hard or resign. I want every student to know that they are a valuable member of society. Within the Green Bay School District board, complacency exists. The true danger of this is that the district turns their accountability towards wrong group of people. I believe we truly need to limit the terms of school board members. What makes you the best qualified candidate to hold this office? This question is singular and unfortunate. Anyone can be qualified to hold an office; it simply takes obtaining signatures. What makes me unique for the office? I have the time to dedicate to the position. I have a unique personality that enables me to pattern and integrate problems quickly. I have experience working with the mentally ill and have no bias working or talking with them. I also have a desire to continue to learn, improve, and never remain stagnate. I truly believe that I can help change the dynamics of the board and improve our district. The results: Taxpayers should see lower taxes as expenses are reduced, less wasteful spending in all areas, and a greater increase and retention of great teachers who will be compensated appropriately.[1][6] |
