Campaign themes
2014
Berryhill's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[2]
- Abortion: God has granted every person certain rights – and the most important of these is life. Every child is a blessing – God doesn’t make mistakes. I will fight to protect the lives of Alabama’s children.
- God in Schools: We removed God from our schools and yet we wonder why our graduation rates plummet and our prison numbers rise. I will fight to restore the rights of our Christian teachers, parents, and students to express and practice their beliefs in a way that encourages moral development and good citizenship.
- Reducing Government Bureaucracy: The overbearing regulations coming down from Federal Government are crippling the economic growth of the states and the freedoms of American citizens. I will fight to reduce the burden of these current regulations and to prevent new ones.
- Homeschooling: Parents that choose to not send their children to public schools pay the same taxes as those that do, yet receive far fewer returns on those taxes. I support a tax break for families who aren’t making the taxpayers fund their children’s education. A homeschooling family should not be required to pay taxes to fund the public education system, plus still have to pay their own education expenses.
- US Constitution: The State of Alabama has both a right and responsibility to not participate in federal programs and measures that blatantly and directly violate the US Constitution. To that end, I support the current attempt to nullify unconstitutional laws and executive orders signed into law and passed down by President Barack Obama.
- Tax Policy: No new taxes! I support revenue-neutral tax reform that would involve a higher emphasis on sales taxes. This would tie tax revenue to economic growth and therefore incentivize conservative, responsible government administration.
- Law Enforcement and Veterans: As a former Army Sergeant and police officer, I believe that benefits for Veterans should never be threatened, much less reduced. We owe our service members our lives and our freedoms, and we will never be able to repay that debt. The future and livelihood of our veterans should be considered sacred.
- Obamacare: Forcing Americans to buy unconstitutional and overly expensive healthcare plans is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they fought and died in the Revolution in the name of freedom. I support the efforts of our Republican legislature to fight this legislation.
- Common Core: The focus of our education system should be on creating good, productive, moral citizens – not competing with other countries on an academic level. We become great by encouraging greatness in our children, not by subjecting them to endless rounds of testing and standardized education using biased textbooks. Education of our children is the responsibility of our parents and our local school boards. I believe in raising our children in a manner that encourages exceptionalism, not standardization.
- Job Creation: I will push for tax breaks to relieve the burden on job creators and incentivize job growth. I will personally work with local and city officials in District 1 to help recruit businesses and expedite job growth. I will push for economic development in North Alabama and the Shoals in the Alabama Senate.
- Freedom: A Free People cannot survive under a Republican Constitution unless they remain virtuous and morally strong. I pledge to remain virtuous and morally strong.

Elections for the Alabama State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014; a runoff election took place where necessary on July 15, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 7, 2014. Mike Curtis defeated Earl Gardner in the Democratic primary. Chris Seibert, Jonathan Berryhill and Tim Melson faced off in the Republican primary. Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Siebert and Melson - met in a runoff election, which Melson won.[3][4][5][6][7] Tim Melson then defeated Mike Curtis in the general election on November 4, 2014.[8]
