Josie Scales was a candidate for District 5 representative on the Harlandale Independent School District school board in Texas. Scales was defeated in the by-district special election on May 6, 2017.

Five seats on the Harlandale Independent School District board of trustees were up for by-district election on May 6, 2017. Four seats were up for general election for four-year terms, and one seat was up for special election for an unexpired two-year term. In District 1, incumbent Juan Mancha was the sole candidate to file in the election. District 3 incumbent Esequiel "Zeke" Mendoza and District 4 incumbent David Abundis also filed for re-election and ran unopposed. Due to lack of opposition the races in Districts 1, 3, and 4 were canceled and the incumbents were automatically re-elected. District 2 incumbent Christine Carrillo defeated challenger Orlando Salazar. In the special election for the open District 5 seat, Jesus Tejeda defeated candidates Christopher Cantu and Josie Scales.[1][2]
