I believe in a strong public education system so that all our children can receive a quality education and live successful lives. I am a retired educator with 30 years of experience who has served as a teacher and school administrator at all levels in four different school districts in NC along with the largest charter school in the state.. I have created and ran education programs for non- profits who served at-risk youth and in high poverty areas. I currently am a member of the New Hanover County School Board and grew up in the area. I started off my career in this school district as a teacher for seven years and have two grown children who attended our schools from kindergarten through graduation. In fact I also now have custody of two my grandchildren who are attending this district. As a result I daily experience what the parents in go through as our children are members of the same educational community, This has provided invaluable information as to the issues facing our families locally when it comes to our current "schools" experience. Since elected to the school board I have fought for accountability and transparency although I have often had to deal with a majority board that has repeatedly failed in these areas, I have still managed to bring about a lot of change for the better such as fighting for students, staff and parental rights to that quality education. When re-elected I will continue to do so.
  • We need to provide resources to our students and staff, we are wealthy district and state, so that our district provides quality education to all students. Currently our schools are at risk of not meeting the needs of our students because of lack of proper funding.
  • We need to correct the racial and economic segregation which is preventing equitable education opportunities for too many students.
  • I will continue to address and fight to correct the failed leadership at the top of NHCS.
As I said before that all students deserve a quality public education, Because of this I believe our elected officials need to fund our schools properly. We need to guarantee quality staff and facilities so that all our children can succeed. All children no matter what their economic, EC, racial or religious or religious status. We need to be flexible in our approach to education, understanding that a lot of the traditional frameworks of classroom instruction have proven ineffective in our 21st century world. Policy needs to be relevant to theses facts and created around how to best educate all students. That includes curriculum; communication; teaching standards; exceptional students curriculums, rights and federal laws; student conduct; staff conduct; parental and student rights and responsibilities; and school leadership.
