Kevin D. Walsh is the New Jersey Comptroller. He assumed office on January 27, 2020. His current term ends on January 18, 2026.
Biography
Kevin Walsh graduated from Camden Catholic High School in Camden, New Jersey, in 1991. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He obtained his law degree from Rutgers School of Law in Camden and during his first year of law school worked for the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.[1][2][3]
Kevin Walsh was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1999. He began his legal career as a law clerk for Gary S. Stein, formerly a justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court.[4][5]
For two decades before his appointment as comptroller, Walsh was a civil rights attorney and executive director of the Fair Share Housing Center. In this position, he filed legal actions to enforce and expand the Mount Laurel Doctrine, the state of New Jersey’s fair housing law, which holds that every community must provide a proportionate share of housing for the state’s low-income residents. He won multiple cases before the New Jersey Supreme Court.[6]
Walsh was also counsel for a team that led a successful effort to abolish the death penalty in New Jersey.[7]
Walsh and his wife have three sons.[8]
