Campaign themes
2014
On her campaign website, Jones highlighted the following issues:[1]
Workforce development
- Excerpt: "There are parts of our district that are thriving yet others are struggling. I believe we can bridge the gap through getting people back to work and doing it quickly. If we want a prosperous district people must be trained quickly and gainfully employed. As a council member, I will work with businesses in the district and city wide, educational entities, and community stakeholders to develop and enhance programs designed to build a stronger workforce that originates from the 8th district. We must always be looking at ways to end poverty and I will be a council member who makes this a priority."
Code enforcement
- Excerpt: "I believe that at its essence code enforcement is needed to reinforce and remind us about the importance of respect. It is about respect for ourselves, our neighbors, and our property. We must eliminate blight in our district. Neglected properties in our neighborhoods impact our property values and in some cases cause safety hazards. We want our property owners to be good stewards of their property and respectful to their neighbors and/or their tenants. Our property values should benefit us and anyone who owns property in our district should be accountable to the district. As such, I would support higher escalating fines for repeat offenders."
Community enrichment
- Excerpt: "Like other areas in Lexington, the 8th district wants access to a healthier food supply, maintenance of its parks and streams, and a safe place to live. As a council member, I would work with the community to explore ways to bring about community gardens as well as the potential for a Farmer's Market in our district. Not only does such an effort promote health across the district, but it has the potential to create a greater sense of community across precincts. Food brings people together. Community enrichment also occurs with a creative use of our parks and the maintenance of our streams. Both are necessary parts of our landscape. I will work to make sure that our landscape is maintained and enjoyed. Finally, a sense of security is important to community enrichment. As a council member, I will work to address issues of poverty that are often at the root of the crime that occurs within our communities. As a Human Rights Commissioner and anti-domestic violence advocate I have developed a good working relationship with law enforcement officials and officers. My life experience and my career path have also allowed me to think critically and work with others to address some of these issues related to crime. As a council member I will be looking to work with others to enter into problem solving, not just problem shuffling."
