Mike Hislop
Mike Hislop is a Louisiana lawyer who ran for a seat on the Louisiana 9th Judicial District Court (with jurisdiction over Rapides Parish) vacated by the retirement of Judge Rae Swent. The election took place on October 4, 2008. His opponents for this seat were Greg Beard, Mary Lauve Doggett and Thomas "Rocky" Willson.
Education and experience
Hislop served as a law clerk to former 9th Judicial District Court judge Lewis "Buddy" Lauve, father of Hislop's opponent Mary Lauve Doggett.[1]
Associations and awards
- Former chairman to the Louisiana Attorney's Disciplinary Board
Approach to the law
Hislop has described himself as a strict constitutionalist:
"Hislop said he loathes members of the judiciary across the country who legislate from the bench. 'Look at California,' he said, referring to a recent court decision to allow gay couples to marry. Establishing law like that "belongs in the legislature. That is something you need to take up with your representative."[1]
Hislop has also pledged himself to around-the-clock availability to the police in certain matters, such as signing a search warrant. "I don't believe law enforcement should hunt high and low to get this executed," he said.[1]
