Mike Schrimpf was a communications director for Doug Burgum's (R) 2024 presidential campaign. He is a campaign communications consultant and co-founder, with his twin brother Chris, of the consulting firm Red Tack Strategy. Schrimpf also served as the communications director for John Kasich's 2016 presidential campaign.[1] He previously worked with Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R), first on his 2014 gubernatorial campaign and then as his deputy chief of staff.[2] Schrimpf was also the communications director for the Republican Governors Association.
Career
Mike Schrimpf spent five years working as the communications director of the Republican Governors Association (RGA), a political organization that serves as a resource for Republican gubernatorial candidates and elected governors. During the 2010 election cycle, both Schrimpf and his twin brother, Chris Schrimpf, worked for the RGA, and the group declared that "two Schrimpfs are better than one."[3]
In April 2013, Schrimpf left the organization to work for Bruce Rauner (R-Ill.), who had formed an exploratory committee to test the waters for a run at the governorship. At the time, Schrimpf told Politico, "Bruce is an incredibly impressive and successful businessman, who cuts a great profile – a results-oriented reformer – for a potential gubernatorial candidate in Illinois. Illinois is in desperate need of reform and I believe it will take someone from outside Springfield to get the job done."[4] Schrimpf served as the campaign's communications director and was responsible for arranging all media contact with Rauner throughout the campaign.[5]
After Rauner won the general election, Schrimpf became the communications director for Rauner's transition committee and then the deputy chief of staff for communications in the governor's administration.[6]
In June 2016, Schrimpf and his twin brother started the consulting firm Red Tack Strategy. Of the firm, Chris told the Columbus Dispatch, "We plan to do a mix of corporate, nonprofit and political work and are launching with half a dozen clients across that spectrum."[7]
In February 2016, Mike Schrimpf left Bruce Rauner's staff to become the communications director for John Kasich's 2016 presidential campaign. In a statement, campaign manager Beth Hansen said, "Mike has worked well with our organization for many years at RGA and will be a good fit with the team as Governor Kasich’s growing support creates new opportunities for us to talk about his positive, unifying vision for America."[1] At the time of Schrimpf's move, his twin brother, Chris, also worked on Kasich's campaign as a senior communications advisor.[8] Kasich suspended his presidential campaign on May 4, 2016.[9]
Schrimpf joined Doug Burgum's (R) 2024 presidential campaign as a communications co-director, alongside his brother Chris, in 2023.[10]
