Mitchell Harry Tyner (b. March 29, 1963, in Yazoo City, Miss.) was a Republican candidate for Mississippi Public Service Commissioner, representing the Central District, in the 2015 elections.[1] He withdrew his bid in March 2015 out of fear that the presence of two Republican candidates—Tony Greer and himself—in the race would divide the party and risk losing the seat to the Democrats.[2]

Biography

Tyner was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, the youngest of three children. When he was very young, the family moved to Canton, where his father worked as an engineer.[3]

Tyner earned his J.D. from the Mississippi College School of Law in 1988 and was admitted to the Mississippi State Bar on his first try. Although he is licensed to practice in Washington D.C., Tyner decided to base his legal career in his home state. He entered private practice as a trial attorney. According to his campaign bio, Tyner was among a small minority of trial attorneys at the practice who were affiliated with the Republican Party. He founded Tyner Law Firm, P.A. in 1995.[3]

Tyner's public service experience includes two appointments to the Mississippi State Bar. Named to the Board of Bar Examiners by Supreme Court Justice Jim Smith, Tyner was responsible for writing and grading Constitutional Law and Criminal Law portions of the bar exam. Mississippi State Bar President Don Dornan subsequently appointed Tyner to serve on the bar's ethics committee.[3]
