Following his graduation from high school, Belton joined the United States Army Reserve. He went on to earn his bachelor's, master's and doctorate, and anticipates graduating from law school in 2015.

He has worked as a teacher, coach, high school assistant principal, middle school principal and South Carolina's Director of School Transformation. Belton founded the Urban and Rural Educational Institute (UREI).[1]
