The education system has been evolving for centuries. Over the course of decades, unbelievable changes have taken place through the implementation of standards and technology in classrooms and in the business world. However, one area that needs to evolve with the administration of education is the inclusion of the voice of parents, teachers and students, or what I refer to as the "Voice That Matters". The Voice That Matters in education can be compared to that of customers and employees in a standard operating business. Successful businesses have learned that it is only through a process of listening to their customers’ desires and needs that future business plans and processes can be developed. They have also learned that it is critical that employees have a voice in the business' operations to ensure they have a vested interest in its success. Without this, a business will not survive. School boards across America must embrace that the success of a school system should incorporate the Voice That Matters--that of its parents, students and employees. The Voice That Matters should be used as guidance in developing a framework that allows every child to be successful using his or her innate talents and abilities. Officials should request and acknowledge feedback of the people that afforded them to serve in the first place and it is my mission to instill this. It is my mission to bring The Voice That Matters into the Shelby County Board of Education by allowing open and transparent lines of communication with parents, students and teachers and truly listening to these individuals as a source of guidance for the future of our students.
