Five seats on the Richmond Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. The election was for Districts 2, 3, 6, 7 and At-large District 9.

In District 2, incumbent Eloise Curtis did not file for re-election; Frank Beckles and Charlie Hannah filed for that seat. In At-large District 9, Board President Venus Cain faced challenger James Swanagan. Incumbents Alex Howard, Jack Padgett and Frank Dolan ran unopposed in Districts 3, 6 and 7, respectively.

Richmond County School System is located in Richmond County, Georgia. The county seat of Richmond County is Augusta. Richmond County is home to 200,549 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Richmond County School System was the 12th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 31,501 students during the 2013-2014 school year.[2]

Demographics

Richmond County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement and median household income in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 19.8 percent of Richmond County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Richmond County was $38,952 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Richmond County was 24.4 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Richmond County Board of Education consists of ten members elected to four-year terms. Eight members are elected by geographic district, and two members are elected at-large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Five seats were up for election in 2014, and five seats will be up for election in 2016.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[5]
