Three seats on the school board for Saugus Union School District were up for district wide elections that were held on November 5, 2013. Incumbents Judy Egan Umeck, Paul De La Cerda, and Douglas A. Bryce defeated challengers Chris Trunkey and Stacie L. Allegra for the three at-large seats.

Saugus Union School District is located in central Los Angeles County in Santa Clarita, California. As of the 2010 Census, Lynwood was home to 176,320 residents.[1]
Demographics
Santa Clarita outperformed in comparison to the rest of California in terms of higher education achievement in 2011, median household income and percentage of residents living below the poverty level. The United States Census Bureau found that 31.7% of Santa Clarita residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 30.5% for California as a whole. The median household income in Santa Clarita was $83,579 compared to $61,400 for the state of California. The poverty rate in Santa Clarita was 7.7% compared to 15.3% for the entire state.[1]

Demographics
Santa Clarita outperforms the rest of California when measured on the basis of median household income, percentage of residents living below the poverty level, percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor's degree and percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma. The median household income in Santa Clarita was $83,579 compared to $61,632 for the state of California. 31.7% of Santa Clarita residents aged 25 years and older attained a bachelor's degree compared to a 30.2 in California. The US Census also showed the poverty rate in Santa Clarita was 7.7% compared to 14.4% for the entire state. The US Census also found that 87.7% of Santa Clarita residents aged 25 years and older attained a high school degree compared to a 80.8% in California.[3]

Method of board member selection
Saugus Union School District School Board consists of five members, all of whom are elected to four year terms. All board members represent the district at large. Board member terms are staggered so that at least two members, but no more than three are to be elected each odd numbered year on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. There are no primary elections. Three seats were up for election on November 5, 2013. The two remaining seats were up for election on November 3, 2015.[4]

Funding
At the time of this election, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk did not publish school board candidate campaign finance reports online. Ballotpedia staffers requested this information, but the only free method of viewing the files was at their office.[5]
Endorsements
The Saugus Teeachers Association officially endorsed Doug Bryce, Paul De La Cerda, and Judy Umeck in the November 5, 2013 election.[6]

On November 8, 2011, two seats were up for election on the Saugus Union School District School Board. Rose Koscielny and Stephen Samuel Winkler defeated one candidate.

What was at stake?
Three at-large seats were up for election on November 5, 2013. Incumbents including President Judy Egan Umeck, Board Clerk Paul De La Cerda, and Douglas A. Bryce filed seeking re-election, they were challenged by two candidates.
Issues
Board member internet presence controversy
In June 2013, SantaClarita.com revealed that incumbent board member Stephen Winkler maintained a public Youtube profile that had a history of disturbing activity. Winkler who also served as a substitute teacher for Los Angeles Unified School District and as a private tutor, maintained the profile which expressed support for the actions of Adolph Hitler, threats against women, and racist rants against Muslims. The account also included comments which claimed Winkler had a personal history of animal abuse.[7] On June 18, 2013, the Saugus Union School Board removed Winkler from office because the district determined Winkler did not live within the district.[8]
