February 11, 2019: By the middle of 2019, 46% of all phone calls will be spam robocalls. First Orion, a call protection company, estimates that by the end of this year, that number will increase to the point where more than half of all calls will be spam.[1]
April is the worst month for robocalls, and April 15 is the worst day.[2] That’s because there’s a strong connection between tax filing day and phone scams.
The problem is so severe that the IRS has a special page warning the public of the problem. More than 4,000 individuals have been scammed out of $23 million due to bogus calls about tax bills. If someone calls demanding a tax payment, it is not the IRS. That agency “will not call you ... without first sending you a bill in the mail.”[3]
