March 23, 2026: Two hundred and fifty-one (251) years ago, on March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry spoke one of the most remembered phrases in United States history: “Give me liberty, or give me death!” This fiery speech came as a result of the oppressive acts the British Parliament was passing against the American colonists. The Coercive Acts were the final straw for many. In this act, Boston’s ports were closed off, Britain’s military was given rule over Massachusetts, officers from Britain were given immunity, and the quartering of British troops was required of colonists. By 1775, tensions had reached a boiling point. Less than a month after Henry’s speech, the first shots of the war would be fired at Lexington, Massachusetts.[1]
