Two seats on the Smithtown Central School District Board of Education were up for general election on May 19, 2015. The election shared the ballot with the school district's annual budget vote.[1]

Seat 6 and Seat 7 were on the ballot. Incumbents Christopher Alcure and Matthew Morton were up for re-election.[2] Alcure ran unopposed and won re-election. Morton did not file to run, leaving the seat open to a newcomer. The race for that seat featured candidates Jeremy Thode and Maryrose Rafferty.[3] Thode defeated Rafferty to win the seat.[4]

Voter and candidate information

The Smithtown Central Board of Education consists of seven members elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis every year in May.[8] Board members are elected at large by the district as a whole, but each seat on the board is considered distinct and elected separately.[9] Ballotpedia has assigned generic titles to all seven seats on the board to prevent confusion. These seat titles are arbitrary and do not reflect the status or seniority of the board members holding them. Seats 4 and 5 were up for election in 2013, Seats 1, 2 and 3 were up for election in 2014, and Seats 6 and 7 were up for election in 2015.[10][11] There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 19, 2015.[1]

School board candidates must be qualified voters and residents of the district for at least one year prior to the election. They must able to read and write and may not be employees of the school district. They may also not be a member of the same household of another board member and may not have been removed from another school board office within one year of the election.[12]

To get on the ballot, candidates had to file nominating petitions containing the signatures of 79 qualified voters of the district with the clerk of the district by April 20, 2015.[13] To vote in this election, residents of the district had to register with the district clerk by May 14, 2015.[13]
