Sponsors of two Arkansas initiatives plan to turn in signatures by deadline

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas: According to reports out of Arkansas, two measures will be handing in signatures on or before the state's July 2, 2010 deadline. Sponsors of four measures had hoped to collect enough signatures but as the deadline nears, only two initiative sponsors are still in contention.

The two measures whose sponsors expect to submit signatures are:

• An initiative to amend the state's constitution to allow Arkansas Hotels and Entertainment to own and operate seven casino gaming establishments; one each in Sebastian, Pulaski, Garland, Miller, Crittenden, Boone, and Jefferson Counties. In addition, the bill would implement a 5 percent state tax on the casino revenue, not allowing city and county taxes. The measure is sponsored by Michael J. Wasserman on behalf of Arkansas Hotels and Entertainment.

• An initiative to ban most illegal immigrants from receiving benefits given by the state. According to supporters, the ban would not extend to children under 14 years of age and illegal immigrants could still receive emergency care. The measure is being circulated by Secure Arkansas.

In order to get a proposed initiated constitutional amendment on the ballot, at least 77,468 signatures must be obtained. For proposed statutes, at least 61,974 signatures must be collected.
