Crowded primaries in Arizona, five races in U.S. House battleground districts, runoff primaries in Oklahoma and school board elections in a district facing federal involvement will be among the races decided by voters in five states today.

The Republican primary for Arizona governor has grown more competitive as the primary approaches, with front-runner Doug Ducey, the current Arizona Treasurer, leading an eight-candidate field by only eight points. He was leading the field by 18 points in late June but former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith has made up ground. Smith's decision to run for governor has left the mayor's seat in Mesa, Arizona up for election following Smith's resignation.[1]

With three U.S. House battleground districts in Arizona, the primaries in Districts 1, 2 and 9 will be of interest.

In Alabama, Huntsville City Schools is in mediation with the U.S. Department of Justice over desegregation issues. Also, a community petition calling for Superintendent Casey Wardynski's resignation began circulating in July 2014. The petition accuses Wardynski of mishandling a desegregation case happening currently in Huntsville. It claims an apparent disregard of parents by Wardynski and argues that the superintendent created a hostile work environment.[2]

In Florida, five of the six largest school board districts having elections this year are having their "primaries," although they are serving as general elections with the possibility of a runoff. Those five districts are: Miami-Dade County Public Schools (346,842 students), Broward County Public Schools (256,472), Hillsborough County Public Schools (194,525), Orange County Public Schools (176,008) and School District of Palm Beach County (174,663). Combined, the 38 Florida districts that fall into Ballotpedia's coverage of the elections in the Top 1,000 Districts educated 2,517,857 K-12 students during the 2010-2011 school year.

Two U.S. House battleground districts in Florida are holding primaries today: the 18th and 26th Districts.

In Oklahoma, three congressional primary runoffs are being held: Democratic primary in the special election for the U.S. Senate seat and both the Democratic and Republican nominations in 5th Congressional District.[3]
